The Hidden Compass

Nora had always believed that the ancient brass compass in her grandfather’s attic was broken. Its slender needle never pointed north. Instead, whenever she held it, the needle spun erratically before trembling toward the dense woods behind her house.

One chilly autumn morning, curiosity finally overcame her caution. She zipped up her jacket, held the compass firmly in her palm, and stepped into the forest. The trail was obscured by a thick carpet of amber leaves, but the compass guided her with unwavering precision. Every time she hesitated, the needle gave a subtle jerk, steering her deeper into the overgrown thicket.

After twenty minutes of winding through towering pines, Nora reached a sunlit clearing she had never seen before. In the center stood a majestic oak tree, its roots wrapping around an old, forgotten stone well. As she approached, the needle stopped moving entirely, pointing directly down into the clear, still water.

Nora peered over the mossy rim. Resting at the bottom was a small, sealed glass bottle containing a rolled parchment. She realized then that the compass wasn’t broken at all—it was simply waiting for someone brave enough to follow where it led.
